Why did you want to spend a board year?

In February 2016 I became an active member by joining the Activities Committee. Soon it turned out that this was the best decision I made so far. I really liked the atmosphere among the active members and the monthly activities. At the end of March, the application for board members opened and I started thinking about it. However, I decided not to apply for a board function since I wanted to attend five courses the upcoming year. After the deadline for the application expired, the function of treasurer was still available. At this moment, it was also possible to attend courses during a board year and I started thinking about it again. Then I realized I would be very young when starting my master and I wasn’t ready for it. A board year would enhance my social skills, I would become critical (which is needed for a master) and I would learn how the bookkeeping of an organization works. All these skills are also very useful for my future job as Chartered Accountant and this made the decision easy.

How is your typical week as a board member?

The weeks starts with the Board Meeting on Monday morning. During this meeting we discuss everything that is going on in Asset | Strategy & Logistics and Asset. On Thursday morning, I have Treasurer Meeting with all treasurers from other Asset departments followed by a finance work meeting in the afternoon where you help with Asset’s bookkeeping. This work meeting takes places once in two weeks. Usually the rest of the week I only have a meeting with the Activities Committee and Study Trip.

Other scheduled activities in daytime are a faculty wide event, for example Food for Thought, flyering for the EBT and a meeting with a committee treasurer. Between these activities, I update the bookkeeping. This includes sending and paying invoices, counting money in cash boxes, call debtors, handling declarations. All these tasks have to be processed regularly in the online bookkeeping program Twinfield.

During the evening, mostly two or three evenings per week are occupied by S&L activities. These are for example an Acom activity, Female activity or a date with the board of another department.

What have you enjoyed the most with the board work?

With the board work you enjoy many things, from joining an event to committee meetings. And not to forget: the great stories next day after a night that escalated a ‘little bit’.

But most of all I enjoy getting to know new active members and have a lot of fun with them at the rooms, Acom activities, Active Members Weekend and the Study Trip to Dublin.

What have you learned the most from your time as a board member?

During a board you learn continuously. You learn to take responsibilities and how to coordinate committees, think critically, communicate and work with other people. This is especially a challenge since not everyone thinks the same as you do 😉 Furthermore, you learn thinking in solutions instead of problems when certain situations occur.

What is your favorite book?

At this moment I don’t have a favorite book, but when I was around three years old I really liked ‘Het rode kippetje’. I was so in love with this book that I knew every word and sentence.

If you could take you board members on a trip, where would you go to?

I still have the desire to go to Lisbon, so why not with my boardies? It was told me that alcohol is cheap there, so that is the biggest plus to make this weekend unforgettable. Furthermore I am always a proponent of a city where the probability of nice weather is high and as being a ‘Zeeuw’ I can’t take distance from the sea.
