Why did you want to spend a board year?

A lot of things actually, I wanted to have a gap year between my two masters and a board year is as good as anything for this. It expands your network and skills, is a lot of fun and you have the opportunity to live the student life to the fullest. Yes, a board year is busy and a lot of work but you get your fair amount of parties along the way!

How is your typical week as a board member?

The week consists of a lot of meetings, a lot of interaction with both fellow board members and students, and trying to finish your daily tasks in the meantime. As you are constantly busy with things that come up instantly, you are sometimes surprised of how little tasks you get done according to your planning. However, if you keep your priorities straight, you will finish them anyway before you can get your well-deserved beer in the bar again.

So, in short, your week will never go as expected but this is a large part of the fun in my opinion.

What have you enjoyed the most with the board work?

Difficult question, besides the general atmosphere, I guess the fact that you get to see and do things that you wouldn’t normally get to see and do as a student. You get to visit a lot of companies and other events that are normally not open to students or are ridiculously expensive (and now you can visit them for free!). An example of this is the VSB, a true ‘old-boys network’ that organizes a sort of symposium every month.

What have you learned the most from your time as a board member?

I have learned a lot of things, but I think I have developed my organizational skills more than anything. Besides all your daily tasks, you have to keep the bigger picture in mind with all according deadlines and necessities. This is something that I hadn’t encountered before in my student life so this has been a valuable addition to my skill set.

What plans do you have for summer 2017?

For the first time in years, I will go on holiday again with my parents. I actually had no intention to go with them initially but as the destination of Iceland was already high on my ‘to-see’ list I couldn’t refuse. Besides this I will probably visit a festival or two and maybe go away for an extra weekend. So the summer will be packed besides all the work of S&L that does not know the meaning of vacation.

What is your favorite TV show?

I don’t watch that much TV to be honest. When I do, I just fire up Netflix and treat myself on a good series. At the moment, I’m watching ‘The Walking Dead’ to which I’m totally addicted which comes quite unhandy as my time is limited. There is also still a lot on my ‘to-watch’ list but if you have any recommendations please feel free to give them!
